Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , the artist who painted photorealist scenes of Bay Area suburbia, died Thursday in Berkeley, California. He was 88 years old.

Kinja'd!!!

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! was born on May 14, 1932, in San Francisco and was raised in Sacramento by his mother following his father’s death when he was 12. His mother worked as a schoolteacher to support Bob and his younger brother Ken, and when Bob began showing an interest in drawing and painting, she nurtured his budding talent.

I’ve never seen his stuff in person, but I’d been a fan for many years.

The Outback & Golf seem most appropriate for the location.

This has got to be the first time I’ve been impressed with the artistry of a Sebring. That’s just amazing.

I love the man’s work. Sad to see him go. The sheer skill involved in some of these is incredible.

It really is.

A celebration of mundanity, in the best possible way.

And that’s kind of the point. His whole portfolio is a celebration of mundanity it seems but revealing the beauty inherent in it.

Amazing stuff, never seen his art before. Wish I had. Those drawings are spectacular and bring back memories of everyday life in SF.

I’m ashamed to say I wasn’t aware of this man and his art, but I’m absolutely astonished by how realistic his work is. I’m writing his name down and I will be keeping an eye out for prints if they’re available somewhere. Look at this! The man was a human camera.

And yet somehow better than a camera. Maybe it’s just the choice of moment he chooses to depict, whether with humans in the frame or not. There’s a non-saccharine sentimentality to it that even like old polaroids can’t really capture.

I can feel the air even in the empty street scenes he painted.
